چکیده
In the manuscript entitled "Activation of the Fas/Fas ligand Pathway in Hypertensive Renal Disease in Dahl/Rapp Rats" Paul Sanders and Pei-Xuan Wang evaluated the renal lesions in hypertensive rats. They used immunohistochemistry to demonstrate an overexpression of Fas and Fas ligand in tubular epithelial and glomerular cells. They also used Western blotting to demonstrate activation of both caspase 8 and Bid, two critical molecules of the Fas/Fas ligand apoptotic pathway. They concluded that these molecules may mediate tubular and glomerular cell apoptosis in hypertensive kidneys.

Activation of the Fas/Fas ligand pathway in hypertensive renal disease in Dahl/Rapp rats
BACKGROUND Hypertensive nephrosclerosis is the second most common cause of end-stage renal failure in the United States. The mechanism by which hypertension produces renal failure is incompletely understood. Recent evidence demonstrated that an unscheduled and inappropriate increase in apoptosis occurred in the Dahl/Rapp rat, an inbred strain of rat that uniformly develops hypertension and hype...
متن کاملActivation-Induced Apoptosis in T cells: Effect of Age and Caloric Restriction
We have previously shown that the proliferative response of T cells to antigenic or mitogenic stimulus decreased with age and that caloric resection (CR) attenuated the age-related decline in proliferation and IL-2 expression. Because activation-induced apoptosis is known to regulate cell proliferation and eliminate the high number of activated cells during an immune response, it was of interes...
متن کاملStatus of FAS and FAS Ligand Gene Polymorphisms in Patients wi th Breast Cancer in Northeastern IRAN
Background: The First apoptosis signal (FAS) and First apoptosis signal ligand (FASL) genes initiate the apoptosis pathway, playing a central role in the tumor growth and metastasis. Gene polymorphisms including -1377 G/A in the promoter region of FAS and -844 C/T in the promoter region of FASL have shown to change the transcription activities of these genes. Methods: In this study we evalua...
متن کاملAqueous Humor Levels of Soluble Fas and Fas-ligand in Patients with Primary Open Angle and Pseudoex-foliation Glaucoma
Background: Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of blindness and is usually associated with elevated intraocular pressure. In patients with primary open angle glau-coma the number of trabecular meshwork cells is decreased. Death of the trabecular meshwork cells may be a result of apoptosis. Objective: To investigate the aqueous humor levels of soluble Fas (sFas) and Fas-Ligand (sFasL) in ...
